Volkswagen is set to significantly revise its electric SUV strategy with the upcoming successor to the ID.4. Expected to launch in 2027, the new model will reportedly adopt the well-known "Tiguan" name, aiming to bridge the gap between its electric and traditional vehicle lineups. This strategic shift includes a more conventional exterior design and a much-anticipated return of physical buttons inside the cabin, addressing common criticisms of current EV interiors.
The forthcoming electric Tiguan will retain the ID.4's fundamental proportions but will feature a more squared-off front fascia with rectangular LED headlights and a full-width light bar. The bumper design will be more upright, and the profile will see a straighter shoulder line and conventional pull-action door handles. At the rear, a full-width taillight cluster will complement the front design, with a revised bumper and subtle roof spoiler completing the updated look.
Inside, the cabin will see a significant overhaul, ditching the ID.4's criticized haptic sliders. While a large infotainment screen will remain, it will be accompanied by physical buttons for steering wheel functions and HVAC controls, along with a traditional volume knob. This move is inspired by the upcoming ID. Polo and aims to improve user experience. The interior will also feature enhanced quality with increased use of recycled materials and fabric surfaces, while maintaining generous occupant space.
Underpinning the new model will be Volkswagen Group's updated MEB+ architecture. The powertrain options are expected to be similar to the current ID.4, with rear-wheel-drive variants producing around 282 hp and all-wheel-drive versions offering approximately 335 hp. The vehicle will utilize LFP batteries with capacities ranging from 77kWh to 86kWh, targeting a WLTP range of 311-342 miles (500–550 km) and improved DC fast-charging capabilities.
Upon its release, the ID. Tiguan will enter a highly competitive segment, facing rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6. Volkswagen is anticipated to officially unveil the model in 2026, with sales commencing the following year.
