Genesis is set to introduce a hybrid variant of its G80 luxury sedan, signaling a strategic shift in its powertrain strategy. Spotted undergoing cold-weather testing, the upcoming G80 Hybrid is expected to debut later this year, featuring a new turbocharged 2.5-liter engine combined with electric power.
The G80 Hybrid, heavily camouflaged in spy shots, suggests that the introduction of the hybrid powertrain will coincide with some exterior styling updates. While specific details are scarce, the prototype appears to feature a revised front bumper with new air intakes. It remains to be seen if these aesthetic changes will be exclusive to the hybrid model, as the G80 received a mild refresh in 2024 that included updated fascias, wheels, and LED headlights, along with interior enhancements like a new dashboard and a 27-inch OLED display.
The most significant development for the G80 Hybrid lies beneath its skin. Genesis and Hyundai have confirmed plans for a new 2.5-liter turbocharged hybrid system for rear-wheel-drive models, slated for release in 2026. This next-generation system incorporates a new transmission with two integrated electric motors. One motor assists with starting, energy generation, and propulsion, while the other is dedicated to propulsion and regenerative braking. This advanced setup is designed to improve power, performance, and fuel efficiency, while also delivering a smoother, quieter, and more refined driving experience.
While official figures for the G80 Hybrid are yet to be released, insights from other Hyundai Motor Group vehicles offer a preview. The hybrid powertrain in the Hyundai Palisade, for instance, produces approximately 329 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. This system combines a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a 1.65 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a six-speed automatic transmission, and the dual electric motors. The Genesis G80 Hybrid is anticipated to offer a comparable, if not enhanced, performance profile, aligning with Genesis's commitment to luxury and driving dynamics.
