Rivian has officially launched its highly anticipated R2 electric SUV, a model poised to be a critical factor in the company's future success. Positioned as a more accessible offering than its R1 siblings, the R2 aims to capture a wider segment of the electric vehicle market.
The initial R2 model boasts a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, delivering an impressive 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. It is equipped with an 87.9 kWh battery pack, providing an estimated range of up to 330 miles on a single charge. Charging from 10% to 80% is expected to take approximately 29 minutes. The vehicle also features a semi-active suspension and eight distinct drive modes.
The R2 comes standard with an Esker Silver exterior, featuring 21-inch wheels and unique Compass Yellow brake calipers. Notable exterior elements include Matrix LED headlights, integrated tow hooks, and a rear liftgate with drop-down glass. Inside, the Black Crater Signature interior is complemented by Birch wood trim, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. A nine-speaker premium audio system and a flashlight integrated into the driver's door are also included.
Rivian is offering the R2 in several configurations:
The R2 offers substantial interior space, with 40.4 inches of rear-seat legroom and 28.7 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 79.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. It also includes dual glove boxes and a front trunk (frunk) with 5.2 cubic feet of storage. Ground clearance is 9.6 inches, with approach, departure, and breakover angles of 25°, 26°, and 20.6°, respectively. The vehicle is equipped with 32-inch tires. Additional features include a panoramic glass roof, digital key technology, a "Haptic Halo" steering wheel, an NACS charging port, and a "Field Outlet" that converts the charging port into a power station with two 120V outlets.
The R2 represents a significant step for Rivian, aiming to broaden its customer base beyond the premium R1 segment. The introduction of more affordable trims and a focus on practicality and performance are key strategies to achieve this goal. The company is currently accepting reservations for the R2 with a $100 refundable deposit.
