Ram is bringing back its compact van, the ProMaster City, for the 2027 model year. After a brief absence from the market, this new version is larger and completely redesigned to meet the needs of modern businesses. Here are the key questions and answers about this returning vehicle.
The market for smaller commercial vans saw a decline, leading both Ram and Ford (with its Transit Connect) to exit the segment. However, Stellantis, Ram's parent company, now identifies a renewed demand from businesses for a van of this size. With few direct competitors, the time is right to offer a new, capable vehicle for urban businesses and tradespeople who need more utility than an SUV but less bulk than a full-size van.
The 2027 ProMaster City is an entirely new vehicle, not an update of the old one. It is now based on a different platform used by several European vans. The most significant change is its size; it is approximately two feet longer than the model discontinued in 2022. This increased length translates directly to more cargo capacity, which now measures up to 173 cubic feet.
Power comes from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. It uses a turbocharger, a device that uses exhaust gas to spin a turbine, forcing more air into the engine for better power from a smaller size. This setup produces 166 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is not available.
Its practicality is a core feature. The van has a payload capacity of over 2,000 pounds and can tow up to 2,000 pounds. The cargo area is designed for work, with a floor length of 107.9 inches and over 48 inches of width between the rear wheel wells. This configuration allows it to accommodate two standard pallets. It will be available in multiple versions, including windowless cargo models, passenger vans, and various combinations of glass and solid panels.
The Cargo version is aimed squarely at small businesses, delivery services, and skilled trades like plumbers and electricians who operate in cities. The Passenger model, which can seat up to eight, is a functional choice for shuttle services or as a utilitarian alternative to a traditional minivan. Its size places it in a unique "midsize" category, larger than the old compact vans but more maneuverable than a full-size Ram ProMaster.
