The upcoming Range Rover Velar is set for a significant transformation, moving away from its current form in two fundamental ways. The next generation will be sold exclusively as an electric vehicle (EV) and will adopt a new body style that departs from the traditional SUV silhouette, resembling a high-riding sedan or fastback.

A New Design Direction

The most apparent change is the vehicle's shape. The new Velar will feature a lower, sleeker profile with a fastback-style rear. While the front end is expected to retain recognizable Range Rover design elements, such as slim LED headlights and a minimalist grille, the overall proportions are different. Spy shots and renderings indicate a steeply raked rear window and a short, stubby rear deck. This road-focused design prioritizes aerodynamics and on-road presence, a practical adjustment considering that few current Velar owners utilize the vehicle for serious off-roading.

All-Electric Foundation

Underpinning the redesigned Velar is Jaguar Land Rover's new Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). This platform is a dedicated base built specifically for battery-electric vehicles. This move to an EV-only powertrain is a major shift for the nameplate. While official battery specifications have not been released, it is possible the Velar could share the 117 kWh battery pack planned for the full-size Range Rover Electric. The engineering focus will be on delivering a driving range and performance level that meets the expectations of customers transitioning from internal combustion engines.

Evolving Market Position

This transformation repositions the Velar within the luxury vehicle market. By moving away from the conventional SUV format, it carves out a unique space as a stylish electric crossover with sedan-like characteristics. This strategy aligns with a broader industry trend of blending vehicle categories to enhance aerodynamic efficiency and appeal to a changing customer base. The new Velar will enter a competitive premium EV segment, where design, technology, and electric performance are key differentiators. The change signals a clear strategic direction for the Velar nameplate in an electrified automotive landscape.
