Mercedes-Benz has introduced the VLE, an all-electric luxury van designed to redefine the premium people-mover segment. Aimed at offering unparalleled rear-seat comfort, entertainment, and extensive range, the VLE is set to launch in the U.S. market, targeting families, leisure travelers, and exclusive shuttle services.
The VLE achieves a remarkable WLTP range of over 435 miles (700 km) thanks to a substantial 115 kWh battery pack. Its aerodynamic design, with a drag coefficient of just 0.25, contributes significantly to this efficiency. On the EPA testing cycle, this is expected to translate to over 300 miles. The vehicle's 800-volt architecture enables rapid charging, adding 154 miles of range in just 10 minutes or 221 miles in 15 minutes. A 10-80% charge takes approximately 25 minutes.
The VLE is available in two powertrain options. The VLE 300 is a rear-wheel-drive model with a single 268 hp motor, capable of reaching 60 mph in 9.5 seconds. The VLE 400 4Matic offers all-wheel drive with a combined 409 hp from its dual motors, achieving 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds. All variants come standard with air suspension and rear-wheel steering, allowing for a tight turning circle comparable to a compact car, enhancing maneuverability.
Mercedes-Benz is positioning the VLE as a premium shuttle, offering seating for up to eight passengers. The interior can be configured with various seating options, including the "Grand Comfort Seat" which features massage functions, lumbar support, and an extendable calf rest. For entertainment, the VLE can be equipped with up to three front screens, including a 31.3-inch 8K display for rear passengers, paired with a 22-speaker Burmester sound system with Dolby Atmos, creating a mobile cinema experience. The van runs on the new MB.OS operating system, integrating Google Maps navigation and an AI-powered virtual assistant, with support for over-the-air updates and numerous apps.
While Mercedes-Benz is optimistic about the VLE's potential in the U.S. market, challenging established SUVs, its success remains to be seen. The premium van segment is more mature in Europe and China, where similar vehicles already have a strong presence. Mercedes plans to keep the V-Class on sale alongside the VLE, as they are considered distinct offerings. Pricing for the U.S. market has not yet been announced, but in Europe, the VLE will start around €79,000 (approximately $92,000). A smaller battery version is slated for release in 2027.
