Volkswagen's highly anticipated all-electric ID. Polo has been spotted undergoing final testing, shedding most of its camouflage and offering a clear look at its production-ready design. The compact EV, expected to launch later this year, is shaping up to be a stylish and practical addition to the electric vehicle market.
Recent spy shots captured two ID. Polo prototypes in Northern Europe, both significantly less disguised than previous sightings. One prototype was equipped with familiar 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, while the other sported a new black wheel design with copper accents, reminiscent of Cupra's styling, though featuring VW center caps.
The exterior design, signed off by Andreas Mindt, Head of Design for the entire VW Group, presents a sporty aesthetic. Pronounced fenders, sculpted lines, and robust proportions contribute to a planted stance. Plastic tape still covers parts of the grille and headlights, and vinyl overlays the full-width LED taillights, mimicking the current internal combustion engine Polo's look.
Volkswagen has already provided a glimpse of the ID. Polo's interior, showcasing a minimalist yet functional layout. A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with retro-inspired graphics complements a 12.9-inch infotainment display. Notably, VW has reintroduced a row of physical switches and a physical volume knob on the center console, suggesting a move back towards user-friendly controls.
The cabin utilizes modern recycled fabrics for large sections of the dashboard and door cards, offering a contemporary feel without excessive use of glossy plastics. The overall dimensions place the ID. Polo at 4,053 mm (159.5 inches) in length.
Built on the MEB+ platform, shared with the Cupra Raval, VW ID. Cross, and Skoda Epiq, the ID. Polo will offer a range of electric powertrains. Initial options are expected to produce 114 hp, 133 hp, and up to 208 hp. A 52 kWh battery pack will be standard at launch, with a smaller 37 kWh unit planned for entry-level variants later.
A performance-focused GTI version has been confirmed, boasting an estimated 223 horsepower, promising brisk acceleration for the compact electric hatchback.
