The Kia EV9 is a large, three-row all-electric SUV, positioned as the brand's flagship model. It utilizes Hyundai Motor Group's Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which is a dedicated foundation built specifically for electric vehicles. This architecture allows for a completely flat floor and a long wheelbase, maximizing interior space and passenger comfort. Its market position is significant: it brings a family-sized, mainstream-priced option to a segment previously dominated by more expensive luxury EVs like the Tesla Model X and Rivian R1S. Its bold, futuristic design also sets it apart from more conventional SUV styling.
The EV9 is available in several configurations. The base model features a single rear motor (Rear-Wheel Drive) producing 215 horsepower. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) versions add a front motor, boosting the combined output to 379 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. This power allows the AWD model to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 4.5 seconds. The long-range RWD model offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 304 miles on a single charge. A key technical feature is its 800-volt electrical architecture. In simple terms, this allows for exceptionally fast DC fast charging. With a compatible 350kW charger, it can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in under 25 minutes.
The cabin is dominated by a panoramic display that combines two 12.3-inch screens—one for the driver's instruments and one for infotainment—under a single piece of glass. While the interface is screen-heavy, Kia has retained physical buttons and switches for essential, frequently used controls like climate and audio volume. This hybrid approach provides a functional balance between modern technology and everyday usability, addressing a common complaint about overly digitized vehicle interiors. The system also supports over-the-air (OTA) updates, meaning the vehicle's software can be improved and new features can be added remotely without a trip to the dealership.
Compared to its gasoline-powered sibling, the Kia Telluride, the EV9 offers a quieter, smoother ride and the long-term benefit of zero tailpipe emissions. Against other large electric SUVs, its primary advantage is value. It provides a three-row layout and advanced technology at a starting price that substantially undercuts its luxury rivals. While the public charging network is still less ubiquitous than gas stations, the EV9's rapid charging capability helps mitigate this concern for long-distance travel. For families seeking a large, practical, and technologically advanced vehicle, the EV9 presents a compelling alternative to both traditional SUVs and higher-priced electric competitors.
