Audi has officially announced the next generation of its high-performance RS5 model, set for a 2027 release. For the first time, the RS5 will feature a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, combining a gasoline engine with an electric motor. This move signals a significant shift for Audi's RS lineup, blending traditional performance with modern electric technology. The new model is expected in both sedan and Avant (wagon) body styles.
The core of the new RS5 is a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine, which works alongside a powerful electric motor. Together, they produce a combined system output of 630 horsepower and 608 lb-ft of torque. This represents a substantial increase in power over the previous model. A plug-in hybrid system means the car has a battery that can be charged from an external power source, allowing for electric-only driving in certain situations. The gasoline engine itself has been updated for better efficiency, using what is called a Miller cycle combustion process.
Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi's signature all-wheel-drive system. This system can adjust how much power goes to the front and rear wheels, ranging from 70% to the front for traction to 85% to the rear for a sportier feel. A new technology called Dynamic Torque Control actively manages power between the two rear wheels. This helps the car turn more sharply and maintain stability during high-speed cornering. Audi claims a 0-62 mph time of 3.6 seconds, though real-world performance may be even quicker.
The RS5 is equipped with a 25.9 kWh battery pack located under the trunk floor. This allows for an estimated all-electric driving range of up to 54 miles in city conditions. Using a 400-volt architecture, the battery can be fully charged in about 2.5 hours at a maximum speed of 11 kW. It is important to note that for the highest performance drive modes, the battery must be charged to at least 90 percent. The vehicle is programmed to maintain this charge level when these modes are selected.
With its 630 horsepower output, the 2027 RS5 positions itself as a direct competitor to other high-performance hybrids like the Mercedes-AMG E53 PHEV. The chassis has been thoroughly upgraded with RS-specific suspension, active dampers, and a unique steering setup to handle the increased power. While the sedan is a given, the potential arrival of the RS5 Avant wagon in the U.S. is highly anticipated by enthusiasts, following the surprising success of the larger RS6 Avant.
