Alpine is transitioning its iconic A110 sports car into the electric age. The upcoming model, due next year, represents a significant step for the brand, aiming to blend its heritage of lightweight agility with next-generation technology. Here are the key details on what to expect.
The next-generation A110 will be built on a new, specialized aluminum chassis known as the Alpine Performance Platform (APP). This is the same core structure that will be used for the radical Renault 5 Turbo 3E concept. This platform is designed specifically for high-performance electric vehicles, prioritizing a low center of gravity and structural rigidity.
Despite being an electric vehicle, the new A110 is engineered to retain a traditional sports car driving position. The 70kWh battery pack is positioned behind the occupants, not under the floor. This allows the car's height to remain low, similar to the current gasoline model, and enables a reclined, feet-up driving posture reminiscent of a race car. The exterior styling will be an evolution of the current design, keeping signature elements like the quad headlights and low-slung silhouette but with a more futuristic aesthetic.
Initial power output will surpass the 345 horsepower of the current A110 R Ultime, delivered by two rear-mounted electric motors. The target curb weight is approximately 1500kg, which is comparable to its current combustion-engine rivals. This focus on managing weight is expected to yield an on-road range of more than 300 miles. The car's endurance is also a priority, with the goal of completing three full-speed laps of the Nürburgring on a single charge.
Alpine is positioning the new A110 as a direct competitor to established players like the Porsche 911. The strategy involves expanding the A110 into a full model range, including a coupé, a convertible, and potentially a four-seat GT version. The interior will feature a new driver-focused cockpit with an emphasis on physical controls and minimal screens, aiming to provide a more engaging and less distracting driving experience. The core brand qualities of lightness, sensitive handling, and driving pleasure remain the central focus of its development.
