Mazda has introduced its new electric sedan, the 6e, to the United Kingdom market. The vehicle is available with a single powertrain configuration across two trim levels. The launch has highlighted a significant pricing difference, with UK customers paying more than double the price of the equivalent model in China, where the car is manufactured.
The UK version of the Mazda 6e is equipped with a 78 kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery. This battery chemistry is recognized for its durability and stability. Power is delivered by a single, rear-mounted electric motor that produces 254 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque. This configuration results in an acceleration time from 0 to 62 mph of 7.9 seconds. The official driving range is stated as 348 miles on a full charge. Using a compatible fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 24 minutes.
The entry-level Takumi trim is priced from £38,995, placing it in competition with vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3. The higher-specification Takumi Plus model starts at £39,995. This pricing is in stark contrast to the Chinese market, where the vehicle's starting price is the equivalent of £16,900. The price in the UK is approximately 2.3 times higher. It is important to note that while the UK does not impose specific tariffs on Chinese-built EVs, all new vehicles are subject to a standard 10 percent import duty and a 20 percent Value Added Tax (VAT), which is included in the advertised retail price.
The Mazda 6e is not an entirely in-house Mazda product. It is built on the same platform as the Changan Deepal SL03, a sedan from a Chinese automaker. This means the core engineering and underlying architecture are shared between the two models. This type of platform sharing is a common industry practice that allows manufacturers to bring new models to market more efficiently by leveraging existing technologies and partnerships.
In summary, the Mazda 6e offers UK buyers a new electric sedan option with distinct styling and a practical range. Its performance figures are moderate for its class, and its price point is substantially higher than in its market of origin, which, along with its shared platform, are key factors for consumer consideration.
