Mercedes-AMG is set to expand its electric vehicle lineup with a high-performance SUV coupe, boasting an astonishing 1000 horsepower. This new model will be the third dedicated EV from the performance division and is slated for a reveal in the latter half of 2027. The decision underscores AMG's commitment to the SUV segment, which represents a significant portion of the brand's global sales.
Mercedes-AMG CEO Michael Schiebe confirmed to Autocar that the brand will "double down on SUVs," explaining the rationale behind introducing a coupe variant. This strategy mirrors AMG's current approach with its internal combustion engine (ICE) models, such as the GLE63 S SUV and its Coupe counterpart. The SUV bodystyle currently accounts for over half of the car maker's worldwide sales, making it a crucial segment for the brand's electrification efforts.
This forthcoming SUV Coupe will be built on the dedicated AMG.EA platform, the same architecture that will underpin two other upcoming AMG EVs. These include a Porsche Cayenne-rivaling SUV, expected early next year, and the production version of the GT XX concept. The GT XX, set to be unveiled later this year, will replace the current GT 4-door and mark AMG's first-ever EV. The new SUV Coupe will inherit its platform mates' advanced features, including a unique round cell battery pack and an 800-volt electrical architecture. Power will be delivered through a sophisticated tri-motor setup, with one motor driving the front axle and two powering the rear. In the GT XX prototype, this configuration has demonstrated an impressive output of up to 1341bhp.
The confirmation of this new electric SUV Coupe comes at a time of leadership changes within Mercedes-AMG. Michael Schiebe, who has led the company since March 2023, is transitioning to a new role as Head of Mercedes-Benz’s Top End Vehicle (TEV) Group, which encompasses the Mercedes-Maybach and G-class sub-brands. He will be succeeded by Stefan Weckbach on July 1st.
