Jaguar’s latest electric sedan, set to launch under the working name Type 00, stands out with ambitious technical choices and a distinctive design philosophy. This fully electric flagship measures over 204 inches (5.2 meters) in length while maintaining a remarkably low profile, with a height under 43.3 inches (1.4 meters). The vehicle is equipped with a total battery capacity of approximately 120 kilowatt-hours, targeting an estimated EPA range of about 400 miles on a full charge.
The sedan is based on Jaguar’s new JEA platform, which is expected to support an 800-volt electrical system. This high-voltage architecture typically allows for faster charging, potentially reducing charging times, although Jaguar has not yet confirmed exact charging speed details. Power output is expected to exceed 1,000 horsepower, facilitated by a triple-motor setup: two at the rear axle and one at the front.
A central innovation in this model is its unique battery arrangement. Instead of the conventional large, single battery pack placed under the floor, Jaguar has adopted a modular approach. The battery is split into five separate stacks: a 19 kWh pack positioned near the front of the cabin, and four 25 kWh packs distributed toward the rear. This configuration enables lower seat positioning and deeper footwells, closely mimicking the coupe-like seating comfort found in Jaguar’s two-seater F-Type sports car.
This design allows for a lower, sleeker silhouette compared to most electric sedans, which typically require higher seating to accommodate conventional battery layouts. While the innovative battery packaging supports the visual appeal and driving position, there are trade-offs. The vehicle will not have a front trunk (also known as a frunk) and lacks a rear window. Additionally, it comes standard with 23-inch wheels, further reinforcing its high-performance stance but potentially impacting ride comfort and tire replacement costs.
In recent years, the electric luxury sedan market has been characterized by competition among established brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. These manufacturers often prioritize interior space and comfort, necessitating higher vehicle profiles to fit large underfloor batteries. Jaguar’s approach differs by putting design and driver engagement first, attempting to carve out a unique niche with its coupe-inspired ethos and innovating on traditional electric vehicle packaging.
Jaguar’s move signals a shift away from incremental improvements and positions the brand as a bold contender in the premium EV field. By forgoing conventional solutions, Jaguar aims to attract buyers seeking exclusivity and advanced engineering, though time will tell how the market responds to the absence of common features like a rear window or front trunk.
