The Capricorn 01 Zagato, a new boutique hypercar, has made its debut, blending German engineering, Italian design, and American V8 power. This striking machine, recently showcased at Salon Rétromobile in Paris, represents a unique fusion of automotive cultures, aiming to capture the attention of discerning collectors.
The Capricorn 01 Zagato is the brainchild of a German engineering firm, with its distinctive styling penned by the renowned Italian design house Zagato. This collaboration is evident in the car's hallmark features, such as the signature double-bubble roof and elegant, almond-shaped headlights. Aggressive aerodynamic elements, gullwing doors, and striking flying buttresses reminiscent of the Ford GT further enhance its dramatic presence. The prototype has been presented in two distinct visual themes: one in Verde Knokke green with a brown leather interior, and a newer iteration sporting a vibrant Giallo Sole yellow exterior complemented by a sharp blue suede cabin.
Inside, the Capricorn 01 Zagato embraces an analog philosophy. The cockpit is characterized by traditional gauges, a gated manual shifter, and a classic round steering wheel equipped with rotary controls. Modern bucket seats provide support, while the interior design artfully combines blue suede with exposed carbon fiber elements, creating a luxurious yet purposeful environment.
Underneath its sculpted bodywork lies a carbon fiber monocoque chassis. The heart of the Capricorn 01 is a mid-mounted, supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine, originally sourced from Ford. This powerhouse has been extensively tuned by Capricorn to deliver an impressive output of over 888 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque. Power is channeled to the rear wheels exclusively through a five-speed manual gearbox, emphasizing the car's commitment to a pure, engaging driving experience. With a dry weight under 1,200 kg, the Capricorn 01 boasts a compelling performance potential, with a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint in under 3 seconds and a top speed of 360 km/h.
Capricorn plans to produce only 19 units of the 01 Zagato, with a price tag of €2.95 million (approximately $3.5 million). Customer deliveries are scheduled to commence later this year. Despite its high price point, the company asserts that only a limited number of these exclusive vehicles remain available. The existence of three fully functional development prototypes underscores Capricorn's serious intentions. While this is their first production car, Capricorn's expertise in lightweight components has previously been recognized and utilized by major automotive players like Porsche, Peugeot Sport, Mercedes, Lotus, Caterham, and Volkswagen in various high-level racing and performance applications.
