Volkswagen is shifting the focus for its Amarok pickup truck, introducing the W600 variant specifically for the Australian market. Developed in partnership with Walkinshaw Performance, this new model prioritizes on-road handling and a sporty aesthetic over extreme off-road capabilities. The Amarok W600 aims to offer a more refined driving experience for everyday use, diverging from the typical rugged truck image.
The most significant changes to the Amarok W600 lie in its suspension system. Developed with input from Koni, the bespoke setup includes a new rear anti-roll bar, all painted blue for easy identification. This revised hardware is engineered to deliver more precise handling and a smoother ride, enhancing the truck's on-road dynamics without compromising its fundamental ladder-frame construction or basic off-road ability.
Visually, the W600 boasts several upgrades, including 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with performance Michelin tires and fender extensions to accommodate a wider track. A body-colored sports bar, distinct model badging, and dual tailpipes contribute to its sporty appearance. Electrically deployable side steps add a touch of convenience and flair. Inside, Walkinshaw branding is present on the headrests, floor mats, and footrest, complemented by aluminum pedals that underscore the truck's tuned character.
Under the hood, the Amarok W600 remains unchanged, powered by the standard 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine producing 247 hp and 600 Nm of torque. While this unit is capable, it falls short of the more powerful V6 options found in some competitors. Volkswagen has indicated that a more off-road-focused version of the Amarok is not entirely ruled out for the future, potentially filling the void left by previous off-road variants.
Currently, the Walkinshaw-enhanced Amarok W600 will only be available to customers in Australia and New Zealand. For enthusiasts in other regions seeking a more rugged Amarok, aftermarket tuners like Delta 4x4 offer modifications such as lift kits and wider fender flares.
