Volvo is preparing to launch a significant over-the-air (OTA) update for about 2.5 million vehicles worldwide. This update will affect all Volvo cars equipped with the Android Automotive operating system, first introduced in the XC40 Recharge (now known as the EX40) in 2020. The new software, named Volvo Car UX, is already featured in recent models such as the EX30, EX90, and new EX60. Once the update is deployed, older vehicles from 2020 onwards will receive the same infotainment design and interface as the newer models.
The update brings a complete refresh of the infotainment display and functionality. One of the main changes is the replacement of the previous-generation Google Assistant with the newly enhanced AI-based Google Gemini system. This system allows for more natural voice interactions, improved navigation, and integration with modern apps. While all updated models will gain these improvements, slight differences may remain due to hardware constraints such as older processors and varying screen sizes. The update maximizes the abilities of connected cars to stay relevant by extending software support and keeping digital features modern.
