The JMEV SC01 is a new lightweight electric sports car developed by Chinese company JMEV in partnership with Tianjin Gongjiangpai Auto Technology (TGAT) and electronics brand Xiaomi. The SC01, first shown in 2022, features a compact footprint, with dimensions smaller than the Alpine A110. The vehicle stands out with a kerb weight of 1365kg, which is notably lighter than both the six-cylinder Porsche Cayman GTS and the MG Cyberster, making it one of the lightest electric vehicles in its class.
According to the manufacturer, the SC01 utilizes a spaceframe chassis, which is bolstered by inboard push-rod dampers designed to enhance handling and structural rigidity. The car is equipped with two electric motors (one on each axle), delivering a combined output of 429bhp. The energy is supplied by a 60kWh battery pack situated between the cockpit and rear axle, following a traditional mid-engine sports car layout. Official acceleration figures state a 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds, while claimed range reaches 311 miles under the China CLTC test cycle.
The SC01 distinguishes itself with technical choices prioritized for performance rather than comfort or advanced digital technology. Unlike many recent Chinese market cars, the SC01’s interior is driver-focused and minimalist, featuring a single digital instrumentation display, physical climate controls, and a conventional handbrake. Critical controls, including gear selection and window switches, are placed on a small console between the seats.
The battery placement contributes to the car’s low center of gravity, aiding handling on the road or track. The push-rod suspension system, commonly found in high-end racing and exotic sports cars, helps keep the chassis stable during dynamic driving. Both the powertrain and structural layout are designed to deliver a mechanical and “raw” driving experience, in line with traditional sports car philosophies.
In terms of market segment, the SC01 is positioned against lightweight performance cars such as the Alpine A110 and the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS. Compared to these, it offers fully electric propulsion with a competitive weight advantage. The 429bhp output and rapid acceleration put it among the quickest cars in its price range.
The SC01 also aims to fill a niche for enthusiasts who value simple, driver-focused interiors and responsive handling in electric vehicles. The total planned production for Europe is limited to 1000 units, enhancing exclusivity. Assembly for European models will take place in Italy. The estimated price is roughly ¥500,000 (about £53,400 or €61,300), which places it above mainstream electric coupes but below some established European sports cars.
Unlike the MG Cyberster, which is heavier and features more technology-oriented interiors, the SC01 keeps weight down and adopts a purist approach to sportscar design. The Alpine A110 and Porsche 718 Cayman GTS, though lighter by conventional standards, are outpaced by the SC01’s electric powertrain in both raw output and acceleration. The use of a minimalist cabin and mechanical focus aligns with a growing segment of performance car buyers looking for EVs that remain engaging and tangible in their driving feel.
The SC01 represents a trend in the EV industry toward high-performance, lightweight solutions that address traditional sports car enthusiasts’ expectations. With production limited and built-in exclusivity, it is positioned as a collector’s sports EV with advanced engineering principles applied to electric mobility.
