Reports indicate Apple Inc. is preparing a significant AI-focused update for the iPhone’s camera application in the upcoming iOS 27 operating system. The planned changes center on two key developments: the introduction of a dedicated Siri mode and a more prominent placement for the platform's Visual Intelligence feature, signaling a strategic shift in how the device interacts with the visual world.
The forthcoming update is expected to add "Siri" as a new primary mode within the camera interface, placing it alongside the existing Photo and Video options. This represents a fundamental change from the current implementation, where Siri's camera functions are largely limited to external voice commands, such as instructing the assistant to open the app or take a picture.
While current iPhones allow users to trigger the shutter with a voice command, the new Siri mode suggests a deeper, in-app integration. This could enable users to adjust complex settings, switch between lenses, or apply AI-powered enhancements in real-time using natural language. In comparison to the current system, this transforms the camera from a passively commanded tool into a more interactive and intelligent creative partner.
Another key change involves the repositioning of Apple's Visual Intelligence feature. At present, this functionality, which allows the camera to identify objects, text, and landmarks, is tied to the Camera Control button, a location that is not immediately obvious to all users.
In iOS 27, this feature is slated to be moved directly into the main camera app interface. This strategic relocation will make the AI-powered recognition capabilities more accessible and central to the user experience. Compared to its current, less discoverable state, this move suggests Apple aims for the camera to be used not just for capturing images, but for actively understanding and interacting with the environment in real-time. The update positions Visual Intelligence as a core component of the photographic process rather than a secondary function.
