Lumia Health has unveiled the Lumia 2, a groundbreaking smart earring designed to be the world's smallest wellness wearable. This innovative device, launched on Kickstarter, aims to provide continuous health monitoring in a discreet and stylish package, moving beyond the bulkiness of traditional wearables. The campaign has already seen remarkable success, surpassing its initial funding goal by a significant margin.

Key Takeaways

Unveiling the Lumia 2

The Lumia 2 is a compact device, roughly the size of a coffee bean, that integrates a second-generation PreciseLight sensor, processors, a battery, and other health sensors. Originally developed in collaboration with researchers from Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Harvard to aid patients with chronic blood flow disorders, the technology has now been adapted for broader wellness tracking.

Comprehensive Health Tracking

Weighing less than a gram and significantly smaller than earbuds, the Lumia 2 smart earrings leverage miniaturized biosensing technology to monitor over 20 health metrics. These include detailed sleep analysis, daily activity (steps, calories, active minutes), readiness scores, menstrual cycle tracking, body temperature, heart rate and its variability (HRV), blood oxygen levels (SpO2), and crucially, blood flow. The inspiration for tracking blood flow stemmed from a personal experience of the co-founder and CEO, Daniel Lee, highlighting the potential to prevent serious injuries.

Event tagging is also a feature, allowing users to log activities like caffeine intake, meditation, and travel. All collected data is accessible through a companion app compatible with both iOS and Android devices.

Innovative Design and Wearability

Lumia 2 offers versatility with three distinct designs: stud, huggie hoops, and ear cuffs for non-pierced ears. The sensors are strategically placed behind the ear, an area Lumia Health suggests offers a stronger, less movement-affected signal compared to wrist or finger-based devices, enabling continuous, uninterrupted data capture. Furthermore, the "SwitchBack" technology allows users to attach the Lumia 2 device to their existing earrings.

Uninterrupted Data Collection

A key feature addressing a common wearable limitation is the Lumia 2's use of swappable batteries. Each battery lasts seven days, and users can simply swap in a charged backup while the depleted one is recharged. This design ensures continuous data collection, especially during sleep, when most users typically charge their devices. The device collects blood flow and heart rate metrics every three minutes, with an optional "Live Mode" for real-time, once-per-second data capture during activities like exercise.

Data Privacy and Usage

Lumia Health states that data collected by Lumia 2 is encrypted, anonymized, and access-controlled. Data is shared with third-party cloud server providers for secure storage. Users also have the option to participate in the "Data From the People, For the People" program, contributing de-identified, aggregated data to open-source research pools vetted by Lumia Health.

It is important to note that the Lumia 2 is not an FDA-cleared medical device and is not intended to diagnose or treat any health condition.

Cost and Membership

The base price for Lumia 2 starts at $249, with additional costs for specific earring styles. All finishes (gold, silver, titanium) are priced equally. A monthly membership is required, with options for monthly ($20), one-year ($14/month), and two-year ($10/month) plans, all providing app insights, cloud storage, and software updates. The most affordable Kickstarter reward is priced at $279 and includes a smart earring back, a titanium cuff, two titanium studs, two batteries, and a six-month membership.

Development Timeline

Founded in early 2020, Lumia Health previously released the Lumia 1 in February 2025. Concepting for the Lumia 2 began shortly after, with its official announcement in November. The Kickstarter launch marks the beginning of the device's beta phase, scheduled for September, with shipments anticipated in December. Early beta access for 500 backers has already sold out.
