The shadow of Geralt of Rivia is long, stretching across the entire RPG landscape. For the developers who helped bring him to life, stepping out of it was a leap of faith into the unknown. Leaving behind the celebrated halls of CD Projekt Red, a small group of veterans, led by The Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, formed Rebel Wolves. Their mission: to forge a new legend, one written in blood and shadow.
That legend now has a name and a date. The studio, in partnership with Bandai Namco, has announced that The Blood of Dawnwalker is set to arrive on September 3rd.
The stage is 14th-century Europe, a continent not just at war with itself, but ravaged by the Black Death. In this desperate world, a new power emerges from the darkness. Vampires, seeing the plague as an opportunity, offer a twisted salvation—a cure, in exchange for blood. It’s a grim, atmospheric setting that feels both familiar to fans of dark fantasy and ripe for a new kind of story.
Into this grim tapestry steps Coen, a man caught between two worlds. He is neither fully human nor fully vampire, transformed into a "Dawnwalker," a rare being who can endure the sunlight. His quest is a personal one—to save his family—but in a world of morally grey choices inherited from its Witcher DNA, his path will be shaped by the player.
Rebel Wolves isn't just telling a new story; they're evolving the gameplay that made their previous work iconic. Dawnwalker promises the deep, choice-based narrative that fans of Geralt's adventures crave. The combat, however, charts a new course, blending real-time swordplay and magic with turn-based elements, a hybrid system that has drawn comparisons to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. It’s a familiar feel with a fresh, strategic bite.
As the wait for the next official Witcher installment continues, a spiritual successor is poised to step into the light. The Blood of Dawnwalker isn't just a new vampire RPG; it's the culmination of a risky journey for its creators. The question isn't whether it can fill the void left by Geralt, but what new legends it will carve into the darkness on its own terms.
