Saros, the narrative-driven roguelike, offers players a complex story with multiple conclusions. This guide breaks down how to achieve both the main and secret endings, offering detailed explanations of their narrative significance and the lore behind the game's enigmatic world. Prepare for major spoilers as we delve into the heart of Saros' mysteries.
To experience the Main Ending, players must progress through the game until they unlock the Yellow Shore biome. After defeating the Consort boss, you'll face the King. Defeat the King, then choose to attack him further by approaching and pressing R1. Passing through the gap in the Yellow Barrier after this action will trigger the Main Ending cutscene.
Unlocking the Secret Ending requires completing the Main Ending first. Afterward, return to the Passage and speak with Kayla at the Echelon 3 camp in Shattered Descent. Progress to the Blighted Marsh and find the large red tree, which will trigger a cutscene. Next, visit Nitya's Lab in the Cathedral Biome, ring the bell, and watch the Holocache recording. Return to the Passage for another cutscene with Kayla, then enter the Banyan Tree for a flashback. Finally, return to the Yellow Shore, defeat the King again, and this time, choose to spare him. Proceed through the Yellow Barrier to witness the Secret Ending.
The Main Ending sees Arjun killing the King and pursuing Nitya's voice, only to find himself back in a familiar room on Earth. He is ultimately corrupted by the Yellow Shore, becoming the next Yellow King. The Nitya beside him is an illusion, and the surrounding strands suggest he is merely the latest in a long line of Kings, trapped in a cycle of corruption and desire.
In the Secret Ending, Arjun confronts the truth about his past, including his murder of his friend Sebastian Torres. He learns Nitya found love with Kiira and that he doesn't deserve her. By choosing to spare the King and rejecting the sun pendant, Arjun breaks free from the Yellow's influence and the cycle of desire. The ending implies Arjun is finally ready to face accountability for his actions, symbolized by the flashing blue and red lights, reminiscent of police sirens.
The Yellow Shore is a cosmic entity that preys on corrupted desires, luring individuals to become the next Yellow King after defeating their predecessor. This cycle, known as "The Path to the Yellow Shore," is an ancient and possibly eternal process. Nitya attempted to disrupt this cycle by creating the Constant AI and the Preserver.
Sebastian Torres was Arjun's friend and an Enforcer on Earth. Arjun murdered him to conceal his infidelity and other transgressions. On Carcosa, Sebastian appears as a figment of Arjun's guilt-ridden mind, serving as a constant reminder of his past actions.
Nitya sought a fresh start on Carcosa with the Echelon 1 team, where she fell in love with Kiira. After her team was corrupted by the Yellow Shore, she resisted its influence, developed the Preserver and the Constant, and eventually found refuge at the Blue Precipice, free from the Yellow's power.
The flashing blue and red lights at the end of the Secret Ending symbolize Arjun's newfound awareness and acceptance of his guilt, particularly for murdering Sebastian Torres. It suggests he is ready for accountability, whether through self-surrender or a symbolic recognition of his crimes.
The Blue Precipice is an enigmatic concept, possibly a place or state of mind, associated with freedom from desire and selfless thought. Those who reach it are immune to the Yellow's influence. Both Kayla and Nitya are linked to the Blue Precipice, suggesting it represents a path to true liberation.
Whether Saros' events are literal or metaphorical remains ambiguous. The game blends science fiction, cosmic horror, and psychological drama, leaving the interpretation of reality to the player. Regardless of its literal truth, the journey leads Arjun to a profound self-realization about his actions and their consequences.
