Rumors surrounding the setting for the next major Fallout installment have increasingly pointed toward New Orleans. This speculation is not new; it traces back to discussions within Obsidian Entertainment, the studio celebrated for developing Fallout: New Vegas. The idea of a Fallout game set in the Louisiana wasteland has been a topic of interest for both developers and fans for years.
Chris Avellone, who served as a senior designer on Fallout: New Vegas, recently shared details about early concepts for a future title. During an interview, Avellone confirmed that while at Obsidian, the team considered New Orleans as a potential location. At the time, the studio hoped to develop a successor to their popular 2010 RPG, but Avellone noted that any thoughts of a "New Vegas 2" unfortunately "quickly evaporated." He expressed doubt that Obsidian would return to the Fallout series anytime in the near future.
Avellone's enthusiasm for a New Orleans setting was significantly influenced by a comic series. He cited Matt Wagner's Grendel, specifically the 1993 storyline "Four Devils, One Hell," which is set in a post-apocalyptic version of the city. Avellone found the noir series' tone and atmosphere to be a strong match for Fallout's signature style. He described the comic's vibe as "so cool," stating that it presented a unique flavor that would fit seamlessly into the Fallout universe while offering a distinct regional identity.
A Louisiana wasteland offers a departure from previous Fallout settings. The unique environment of a swamp city, combined with the rich culture of New Orleans, could introduce new factions, creatures, and survival challenges. The concept has garnered support beyond just the original Obsidian team. Nate Purkeypile, a former lead artist at Bethesda on Fallout 76, has also publicly endorsed the idea, stating that a New Orleans setting would "get my vote for sure." This widespread interest among developers and fans highlights the creative potential of exploring the bayou in a post-nuclear world.
While Bethesda has not confirmed any details about Fallout 5, the New Orleans concept remains a popular and well-reasoned possibility. With roots in ideas from veteran developers and a unique cultural backdrop to draw from, the "Big Easy" stands out as a compelling candidate for the next chapter in the Fallout saga.
