Chinese electric vehicles are pushing the boundaries of automotive technology with the introduction of headlights that can project full-color movies. This innovation, showcased by Huawei's XPixel technology, transforms vehicles into mobile entertainment centers, capable of turning any flat surface into a screen for a personal drive-in experience.
Huawei unveiled its latest XPixel headlight technology at the Huawei Qiankun Technology Conference during the Beijing Auto Show. This system offers full-color projection capabilities, allowing car owners to park their vehicles and use nearby walls to watch movies or shows, akin to a personal drive-in theater.
The underlying XPixel technology has been in development for approximately three years and is already featured in vehicles such as the Huawei Stelato S9. Beyond entertainment, the technology is integrated with driver assistance systems. It can project guided paths to assist with lane changes or display signals for pedestrians to cross the street. It can even project interactive games, like hopscotch, for children.
The new full-color XPixel version is set to debut in the Aito M9 and is also planned for other upcoming models, including the Qijing GT7 and Luxeed V9 MPV.
This development starkly contrasts with the pace of headlight innovation in the United States. For decades, U.S. regulations for automotive headlights remained largely unchanged. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards previously restricted the deployment of advanced technologies like adaptive driving beams. While proposed changes were finalized in 2022, allowing for adaptive beams, other global markets, particularly China, had already moved significantly ahead.
Chinese automakers are increasingly integrating cutting-edge technology into their vehicles at competitive price points, with advanced headlight systems being the latest example of this trend.
