Ford's latest electric drag racer, the Mustang Cobra Jet 2200, has made a thunderous debut, silently outperforming all previous V8 Cobra Jet models. This all-electric marvel boasts an astonishing 2,200 horsepower and has set new world records for electric vehicles on the quarter-mile.

Key Takeaways

A New Era of Electric Drag Racing

The Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 represents the third iteration of Ford's all-electric Cobra Jet program, following the Cobra Jet 1400 and 1800. This new model significantly ups the ante with its dual electric motors, each capable of delivering approximately 1,200 horsepower. This immense power output surpasses even that of many hypercars.

Advanced Powertrain and Weight Reduction

Despite its electric nature, the Cobra Jet 2200 employs a centrifugal clutch for controlled torque delivery at launch, coupled with a two-speed transmission. Its battery system is strategically placed, with packs on the undertray, at the rear, and a movable pack at the front to optimize weight distribution for different track conditions. A key factor in its performance is the substantial weight reduction; Ford Racing managed to shed 1,100 lbs (499 kg) compared to the Cobra Jet 1800, bringing the total weight down to around 3,325 lbs (1,500 kg).

Record-Breaking Performance

Ford Racing showcased the Cobra Jet 2200's capabilities at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte. The electric Mustang consistently ran sub-7-second quarter-mile times. It initially set a new world record for an EV with a 6.87-second pass at 221 mph, and subsequently improved upon this with an astonishing 6.81-second run at the same speed. Ford claims the car is capable of a 6.76-second quarter-mile at speeds up to 222 mph.
