Freelander 8 Revealed: A New Electrified SUV Larger Than a Defender

The Freelander brand, revived through a partnership between Jaguar Land Rover and Chery, has officially unveiled its first production model, the Freelander 8, at the Beijing Auto Show. This new vehicle is a large SUV planned for global markets and is notably larger than the Land Rover Defender 110.

Platform and Powertrain Options

The Freelander 8 is built on the new iMAX platform, which is designed to accommodate several types of powertrains. These include fully battery-electric (EV), extended-range electric (EREV), and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) configurations. An EREV uses a small gasoline engine to act as a generator, recharging the battery to extend the vehicle's driving distance without directly powering the wheels.

All models will utilize an 800-volt electrical architecture. This system allows for significantly faster charging times compared to the more common 400-volt systems found in many electric vehicles. For the battery-electric versions, this enables DC fast charging speeds of up to 350 kW, which can add substantial range in a short amount of time.

Design and Dimensions

The exterior design of the Freelander 8 closely follows the previously shown Concept 97. It features distinctive square headlights and a front end that forgoes a traditional grille in favor of small air intakes on the bumper. The vehicle is equipped with flared, blacked-out wheel arches and rugged side skirts. A notable change from the concept is the use of conventional rear doors instead of the concept's rear-hinged 'suicide' doors.

The vehicle's size is a key attribute. It is longer, taller, and wider than a Land Rover Defender 110, placing it firmly in the large SUV category. A LiDAR sensor is integrated above the windshield, indicating the inclusion of advanced driver-assistance systems.

Interior and Technology

While interior photos have not been released, the company has stated the Freelander 8 will feature the largest “Mini LED integrated screen” in its class, suggesting a large, high-resolution dashboard display. The front will also be equipped with “zero-gravity” seats, which are designed to provide maximum comfort and support by distributing body weight evenly.

Market Outlook

The Freelander 8 is set for a global release, with both left- and right-hand-drive versions planned. However, sales are not expected in the United States market. The brand has an ambitious roadmap, with plans to launch a total of six new models over the next five years. Given its size and shared heritage, the Freelander 8 may compete for customers with other models in the JLR portfolio.
