BMW has announced a significant update for its 2027 7 Series lineup, with the all-electric i7 model receiving substantial technological advancements. The refresh introduces a new battery system, faster charging capabilities, and a next-generation electrical architecture derived from the Neue Klasse platform.

Powertrain and Battery Upgrades

The core of the i7's update lies beneath the floor. The vehicle is now equipped with a new battery pack featuring sixth-generation cylindrical cells, a change from the previous prismatic units. This new design improves energy density, which means the battery can hold more energy in the same physical space. The usable capacity has increased to 112.5 kilowatt-hours.

As a result, the preliminary EPA-estimated range for the i7 60 xDrive model now exceeds 350 miles. Charging speeds have also seen a notable increase. The maximum DC fast-charging rate is now 250 kilowatts, up from 195 kW. This allows the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes. Additionally, all i7 models will come standard with a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, granting access to the Tesla Supercharger network.

New Electrical Architecture

All 2027 7 Series trims will adopt the new zonal electrical architecture developed for the Neue Klasse platform. This system replaces numerous individual control units with a single, powerful central computer and more organized wiring. The change reduces the total length of the wiring harness by 2,000 feet and its weight by 30%. This streamlined architecture is designed to support more complex software functions and over-the-air updates.

Design and Interior Features

The exterior of the i7 has been refined for a sharper appearance. It features a slimmer, illuminated kidney grille, revised headlights, and a larger BMW logo. The interior sees the introduction of the Panoramic Vision display, which projects key vehicle information across the entire lower width of the windshield. This is complemented by a new 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a 14.6-inch screen for the front passenger. The optional rear Theater Screen maintains its 8K resolution and now includes a camera for video conferencing.

Model Variants and Market Availability

Two all-wheel-drive i7 variants will be available at launch. The i7 50 xDrive produces 449 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The more powerful i7 60 xDrive offers 536 horsepower, achieving a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds.

Pricing for the refreshed i7 starts at $106,200 for the 50 xDrive and $124,700 for the 60 xDrive, excluding a $1,550 destination charge. Production is scheduled to begin in July 2026 at the BMW Group Plant in Dingolfing, Germany.
