The Cupra Born, an electric vehicle built on the Volkswagen Group's shared MEB platform, has received a significant mid-life update. While closely related to the Volkswagen ID.3, the refreshed Born introduces a series of enhancements aimed at improving performance, design, and, most notably, interior usability. The changes address key feedback from the previous model, strengthening its position in the competitive electric hatchback segment.

Updated Powertrain and Charging

The refreshed Born lineup offers a range of powertrain configurations. The entry-level model is equipped with a 58kWh battery pack and a 187-horsepower motor, delivering a stated range of approximately 300 miles. A larger 79kWh battery option is also available, which can extend the vehicle's range to 389 miles when paired with a 228-horsepower motor. At the top of the range, the VZ model uses this same 79kWh battery but boosts output to 322 horsepower, providing performance comparable to that of a sports car.

Charging capabilities are competitive for its class. The 58kWh battery can be charged at speeds up to 108kW, while the larger 79kWh pack accepts a faster rate of up to 183kW. These figures are in line with other 400-volt electric vehicles on the market.

A Focus on Interior Ergonomics

Exterior design changes are subtle, featuring a sharper front end with distinctive triangular light patterns and a new light-up logo on the rear. The most impactful revisions, however, are found inside the cockpit. In a direct response to criticism of the previous model's user interface, the updated Born features a redesigned steering wheel. The difficult-to-use haptic touch controls have been replaced with physical buttons and rollers for audio and cruise control functions. This move toward more traditional, tactile controls enhances ease of use and safety, reflecting a wider industry trend away from screen-only or touch-sensitive interfaces.

Market Position and Analysis

The Cupra Born is positioned as a sportier alternative to other vehicles on the MEB platform. This refresh solidifies that identity while addressing practical shortcomings. The introduction of physical controls makes the car a more user-friendly daily driver. With a pricing structure that covers a wide spectrum from practical commuter to high-performance EV, the updated Born presents a well-rounded package. By implementing these useful updates first, Cupra has refined an already capable electric hatchback, making it a more compelling choice for a broad range of drivers.
