Smart has officially teased the return of its iconic two-seater city car with the new Concept #2. This vehicle previews the long-awaited successor to the legendary ForTwo. For enthusiasts who remember the original, here are the key questions and answers about this comeback.
Yes. The company has confirmed a successor to the original ForTwo, which ceased production in 2024. The new model is previewed by the Concept #2. This vehicle is designed to be the spiritual heir to the car that made Smart famous, bringing back the ultra-compact, two-seat format for modern city driving.
Based on official sketches and teasers, the Concept #2 retains the classic short, tall silhouette of the original ForTwo. However, it is a completely modern design. It features the new family front-end seen on larger models like the Smart #1 and #3, and has noticeably wider, more muscular wheel arches. The concept shown features a premium matte white and gold finish, signaling that this will be a high-quality product, not a bare-bones vehicle.
This new model will be the smallest vehicle in the current Smart portfolio, positioned below the #1 compact SUV. The brand has shifted its focus to become a premium electric vehicle manufacturer. Therefore, the new two-seater will not be a budget car like some micro-EVs. It aims to blend the classic ForTwo's practicality with the premium feel of the new Smart family.
Full technical specifications have not yet been released. The main challenge in creating such a small electric car is packaging. Engineers must fit a battery pack, electric motor, and all required safety systems into a tiny frame while ensuring adequate interior space and practicality. Smart's leadership has acknowledged this engineering difficulty. The goal is to deliver a functional and desirable city EV that lives up to the ForTwo name. More details will be available following its official debut at the Beijing Auto Show.
