Kia has confirmed plans to introduce a new small electric hatchback in Europe, with a target launch year of 2027. This new model, potentially badged as the EV1, is positioned as an electric alternative to the popular Picanto city car and will compete directly with established European rivals in the B-segment.

Powertrain and Performance

The vehicle will be built on the E-GMP platform, a dedicated architecture designed specifically for electric vehicles. This foundation allows for a flat interior floor and optimized cabin space, a significant advantage in a compact car. It will utilize a 400V electrical system. Two battery options are anticipated: a standard 42.2kWh pack and a long-range 61kWh version. These configurations are expected to deliver driving ranges from approximately 200 miles for the base model up to nearly 300 miles for the extended-range variant, catering to different user needs and budgets.

Advanced Vehicle Integration

A key technical feature of this upcoming model is its designation as a 'software-defined vehicle' (SDV). This means the car's core functions, from infotainment to vehicle controls, are managed by a central computer system rather than multiple separate units. This approach allows for more seamless integration of features and enables the manufacturer to deliver performance improvements and new functionalities through over-the-air software updates, much like a modern smartphone.

Market Strategy and Competition

With an expected starting price in the low-£20,000 range, Kia is positioning the car to be a strong contender in the affordable EV market. It will directly challenge models such as the Renault 5, Peugeot e-208, and Vauxhall Corsa Electric. This launch is part of Kia's revised global strategy, which acknowledges a recent slowdown in EV demand. The company's CEO has referred to this period as the "chasm" phase, where growth is more measured following initial rapid adoption. This new hatchback represents a targeted effort to attract a wider range of buyers with a practical and cost-effective electric option.
