BMW is offering an early look at its upcoming iX5 Hydrogen, a fuel cell crossover poised to redefine range and refueling convenience. With an anticipated EPA range of approximately 385 miles, the iX5 Hydrogen aims to address common concerns about hydrogen vehicle practicality. This innovative approach integrates a unique, flat hydrogen storage system designed for maximum space efficiency and rapid refueling.
The standout feature of the iX5 Hydrogen is its novel hydrogen storage solution. The vehicle will be equipped with seven high-pressure hydrogen tanks constructed from carbon-fiber reinforced composite. These tanks are ingeniously designed to lie flat, side-by-side, allowing for "exceptionally efficient use of the space." Connected and integrated into a single enclosed unit, these tanks can hold at least 7 kg (15.4 lbs) of hydrogen, enabling a full refuel in less than five minutes – a timeframe comparable to gasoline-powered vehicles and significantly faster than many current electric vehicle charging times.
Interestingly, BMW has designed this flat storage system to be compatible with the automaker's Gen6 high-voltage battery. The two components occupy a similar spatial footprint, suggesting that BMW can easily switch between hydrogen fuel cell and battery-electric configurations on the same production line. This flexibility promises to reduce manufacturing complexity and allows BMW to offer a diverse range of powertrains for the X5 model line.
Beyond the fuel cell variant, the redesigned BMW X5 will offer a comprehensive suite of powertrain options. The iX5 Hydrogen will be one of five choices available, alongside fully electric, plug-in hybrid, diesel, and gasoline variants. BMW is also hinting at the integration of "new Heart of Joy drivetrain and chassis control software," likely drawing from its upcoming Neue Klasse technology, further enhancing the vehicle's performance and driving dynamics. The iX5 Hydrogen is slated for production in 2028, marking a significant step in BMW's commitment to diverse sustainable mobility solutions.
