ZF's AI Road Sense Aims to Predict and Adapt to Road Surfaces

Automotive supplier ZF has introduced a new technology called AI Road Sense, a key component of its 'Chassis 2.0' strategy. This system is engineered to assess the road surface ahead of the vehicle and make instantaneous adjustments to the suspension, aiming to enhance both ride comfort and safety before a driver even feels an imperfection.

How the System Functions

AI Road Sense operates by using a vehicle's existing sensors to gather data about the road. This information is processed by ZF's 'Cubix' software, which acts as the central controller for the chassis. The software analyzes the data to predict upcoming surface conditions, such as potholes or rough patches, and then adjusts the suspension's damping and other settings to prepare the vehicle for the impact. Damping refers to the control of the suspension's movement to prevent excessive bouncing.

ZF offers this technology in three configurations. The 'Standard' version utilizes data already available from the car's sensor network. The 'Advanced' version incorporates a camera for more detailed surface detection. The 'Premium' option adds lidar scanning, which can create a three-dimensional profile of the road up to 25 meters ahead, providing the most comprehensive data for the system to act upon.

The concept of reading the road is not entirely new, but ZF's application focuses on proactive adjustment. Other manufacturers have explored similar paths. For instance, Honda has researched systems to monitor road conditions for maintenance purposes, while Nexteer Automotive developed software to detect road friction levels like ice or water. Jaguar Land Rover has also researched terrain-scanning technology for off-road applications.
